Gloucester Road Station, London
One of the many London underground stations we have worked on, this grade 2 listed building was designed by Leslie Green and built 1906.
The steel framed building is clad in oxblood red faience originally supplied by one of our former competitors Burmantoffs of Leeds. Lack of maintenance over the years allowed water to enter at roof level, resulting in rusting and expansion of the steel frame, which in turn caused cracking to the faience.
Having eliminated the corrosion of the steel structure, a cathodic protection system was installed to prevent further rusting. Defective faience blocks were replaced and repointed with a lime mortar.
Replacement faience consisted of new cornices, arches, gold leaf lettering, plinths etc. Working with Lawrence and Wrightson Architects and specialist contractor, Stonewest Ltd, this façade has now been brought back to its former glory.
