The Hoover Building
Situated on the A40 Perivale London, the Hoover Building is a stunning example of Art Deco Architecture.
Designed by Wallis Gilbert & Partners and erected between 1931-35, for the manufacture of vacuum cleaners, the façade was made from a combination of a white concrete, decorated with brightly coloured faience.
Used by Hoover as their UK headquarters until the 1980’s and listed as Grade 1 building, shortly after the similarly deco Firestone building was unexpectantly demolished when being days away from being listed.
The building was bought by Tesco in 1989 for conversion to a superstore. Having previously helped restore the building in the 1960’s, Shaws again helped restore the original façade in 1992.
At the same time Tesco embarked on the building of a new superstore behind, designed by Lyons Sleeman & Hoare. The construction was in the style of Art Deco, sympathetic to the historic Grade 1 building.
Extensive bands of colour, black, orange and blue were incorporated in the scheme and made by Hathern. Later extensions to the building incorporating the same black and orange bands were made at Shaws.
