The London Coliseum - UK Projects

"Very probably the most demanding terracotta façade restoration project in recent times, as part of the design and construction team, we decided Shaws of Darwen were the only company who had the skills to supply such a project.

With the ever changing requirements as the façade was uncovered, the decision to use Shaws was borne out with their knowledge and commitment and along with the excellent team efforts of all concerned, this ensured the successful completion of this prestigious building."

The London Coliseum
The original terracotta to yet another Frank Matcham designed theatre was produced from one of our two present sites by the Hathern Station Terracotta Company Limited at the turn of the Century.

This London grade ll* landmark is the home of the English National Opera and has recently undergone extensive refurbishment both internally and externally.
The façades and tower are constructed from load bearing terracotta and steelwork much of which had corroded and had to be replaced.

Our experience on such projects was called upon and our survey team spent months, measuring every block and profile of this magnificent building in order to prepare working drawings of existing and new construction.

Along with the 4600 new Terracotta blocks to the façades and tower, our brief was also to replace the missing atlas figures and lions. Having searched the Hathern archives without success we had to recreate these sculptures from experience. Now over 100 years later our Terracotta once again adorns this beautiful building and the result is dramatic, breathing new life into Matcham’s original masterpiece. This could only be achieved with the vast experience of all those involved in the design, management and specialist construction teams.
